About this project

The role of social networking services and mobile phone technology in facilitating sexual violence is a research project funded by the Legal Services Board of Victoria.

This project is a partnership project between the ACSSA and CASA Forum which:

  • Explores the use of new communication technologies, specifically social networking sites and mobile phone technology, in the facilitation of sexual violence.
  • Focuses on the experiences of young people aged 16-20 years, the most group at most risk of sexual assault* and most likely to use social networking services.

* Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006

Its mission is:

  • To add to existing knowledge about the role of social networking technology in the facilitation of sexual violence perpetration;
  • To inform legal policy makers and practitioners about this issue; and
  • To examine the challenges of social networking services and mobile phone technologies for the legal system.
