Young People - Resources

Resources related to young people that will assist practitioners, managers and service providers in their work and/or provide information and resources for families and family members. Suggestions for inclusions are always welcome at afrc@aifs.gov.au.

Alcohol Advisory Council of NZ

ALAC has produced a number of resources specifically for parents concerned about their teenagers. Their newest resource "Bewildered" focusses on the stories and processes of change for parents who have teenagers with alcohol or drug use problems and associated behaviours. The resource is a DVD and booklet, which you can order free from ALAC.

Bursting the Bubble

This website is a resource for young people living with family violence.

Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues

The Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues (CMYI) site has information for workers on young people from different cultural backgrounds, including some great information sheets on newly arrived families (under the NAYSS site, see LH menu).

Headroom

Headroom is a South Australian mental health promotion project managed by the Division of Mental Health, Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide. This website aims to inform young people, their caregivers and service providers about positive mental health.

Itsallright

Created by SANE Australia, Itsallright is a website where you can read the diaries of four fictional teenagers touched by mental illness. It also has useful factsheets and provides an online information and referral service on mental illness including schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders.

Peers Outsmarting Homophobia (POSH)

Outsmarting Homophobia is an excellent new resource designed to help young people who are becoming aware of an attraction to others of the same sex.

ReachOut!

Reach Out! is a service that helps young people get through tough times. It provides information and support on a range of issues including depression and anxiety; drugs and alcohol; family, friends and relationships problems; suicide, loss and grief; sex and sexuality; and dealing with the pressures of school and uni.

Strong Bonds

The Strong Bonds website offers useful information to help parents support a young person through hard times. The site also has a section for youth workers, to help them effectively work with families.

Ybblue

Ybblue's all about getting the message out there that it's okay to talk about depression, and to encourage young people and their family and friends to get help when it's needed.

YoungCarers

This site provides information, contacts and support for young carers, parents, and primary teachers.

Your sex health

This website is about reproductive and sexual health. It delivers expert information on emotional, practical and relationship issues and explores real-life dilemmas in True Stories.

Youth Mentoring Network new

The Network is an initiative of the National Youth Mentoring Partnership which consists of four not-for profit organisations (The Smith Family, Dusseldorp Skills Forum, Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia and Job Futures) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The Youth Mentoring Network aims to work with interested youth mentoring organisations and practitioners to foster the growth and development of high quality mentoring programs for young people in Australia by providing a national base of collaboration, support, guidance and expertise.
