Family violence and the law: Putting 'private' violence on the public agenda
The Victorian Law Reform Commission is undertaking a comprehensive review of Victoria's family violence laws. Significant developments are also occurring with the police, courts and service sector in parallel with this review. The review is considering whether the Crimes (Family Violence) Act 1987 is based on a coherent philosophy and having regard to national and international experience, its approach is the best available. The Commission is undertaking a comprehensive review of these issues through research, consultation, and comparative analysis of other jurisdictions in Australia and overseas. In 2004 The Commission uncovered legal, procedural and administrative issues through an extensive consultation process and recently released a Consultation Paper on family violence, which outlines these issues.
