Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) is a major study that follows the development of 10,000 children and families from urban and rural areas of all states and territories of Australia.
LSAC collects and collates information about children’s physical health and social, cognitive and emotional development, as well as their experiences in environments such as the family, child care, preschool and primary school and their broader communities.
A major aim of the study is to identify policy opportunities for improving supports for children and families and for early intervention and prevention strategies. LSAC data also is used to inform many of the Institute’s other research projects. The Life at 1 and Life at 3 documentaries, produced by Film Australia and Heiress Films and screened on ABC TV, drew upon the methodology and findings of LSAC. Life at 5 is in pre-production.
The 2nd LSAC Conference was held in Melbourne on 3 and 4 December 2009.
More detailed information about this research project is available on the Growing Up in Australia website.
