childprotect
The goal of childprotect is to provide a venue for exchanges of information in the areas of child abuse prevention, child protection and out-of-home-care.
childprotect is designed to promote the exchange of information between professionals working in the field of child abuse prevention, child protection and out-of-home-care and other interested people. It is not a case discussion forum or a forum for sharing or discussing personal opinions.
Appropriate topics for discussion can include:
- child abuse and neglect research
- requests for research, policy or practice information
- developments and changes to child protection and child abuse prevention, policy and practice information
- best practice in child abuse prevention and protection
- family violence issues as they pertain to child maltreatment research and practice
- education and training in child protection and child abuse prevention
- notices about upcoming conferences, workshops, events
- pointers to, or calls for, contributions to publications and conferences
- pointers to new publications, online papers, resources, links, and websites that fall within the above parameters
Moderation policy
childprotect is moderated. Messages to the list are received by the moderator who has the option to accept it, discard it, or request you to post a revised message that conforms with the list guidelines.
Flaming*, trolling**, harassing or unprofessional messages, insulting or aggressive language will not be accepted by the list owner. Members who engage in such behaviour directed at either the moderator, the list owner or other members (either on or off-list) may be removed immediately without further discussion.
In general, messages are discarded if they:
- are not related to child abuse prevention, child protection or out-of-home-care
- pertain to individual cases
- are overly general requests for information and assistance
- are intended for an individual list member or the moderator and not intended for general list information
- contain attachments
- breach copyright laws
- contain political material
Discussion about rejected messages will be limited to one advisory message to the author. Further discussion about the message is at the discretion of the moderator and the list owner.
Harrassing, aggressive or bullying messages will be rejected automatically. In these instances, no advisory email will be provided.
*"Flaming" is what people do when they express a strongly held opinion without holding back any emotion. It is generally mean or derogatory and has the intent of demeaning another or initiating conflict.
**"Trolling" is a little more subtle than flaming. Trolls seek to disrupt online discussion groups, not by flame throwing but by carefully provoking the discussion group into responding to controversial comments which are often tailored to be diametrically opposite to the majority view of the group.
Mailing protocol
To submit a message for posting on childprotect:
Send mail to: childprotect@aifs.gov.au
To mail to list owner (problems etc):
Send mail to: childprotect-owner@aifs.gov.au
Subject line
As a courtesy to other subscribers, always fill in the Subject line when you post a message to childprotect
Default reply setting
This list is set up so that replies are sent to the entire list, not the author of the original message. Therefore, if you click 'Reply' to a message from the list, your message will be submitted to the Moderator for posting. It will not go to the author of the original posting.
Posting policy
Only subscribers may post to childprotect. Specifically, this means that only emails that contain a subscribed email address in the 'From: field' reach the Moderator. Messages from non-subscriber addresses are rejected (with notification to the sender) to protect list resources against spam. childprotect subscribers can subscribe under as many of their email addresses as desired if they want to post from different accounts. Of course, subscribing under multiple email addresses means that you receive childprotect postings at each of those addresses.
Message format
Messages in HTML format or those that have attachments will not be posted. Some subscribers do not have systems that support HTML format. Attachments present a virus risk to other list members, and can be extremely inconvenient for members with slower Internet connections. In the majority of cases, messages with attachments will be discarded by the childprotect moderator.
Auto-reply policy
Subscribers should refrain from using the auto-reply feature available in many email programs. Auto-replies are messages that are sent to people automatically when you are on vacation. When a subscriber selects this option, the childprotect Moderator receives an auto-reply for every post to the list. If you must use the auto-reply feature, please unsubscribe from the list while you are on vacation and re-subscribe upon your return.
